Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited is a subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) and it is located at Mangalore in the form of an oil refinery. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited came into being in the year 1988 and is sited at a place called Katipalla which lies to the north of the city of Mangalore. The refinery came into being after the displacement of five villages namely Kalavar, Bala, Katipalla, Adyapadi and Kuthetor. The initial processing capacity of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited at the time of its inception was only 3.0 million metric tonnes which has increased to its present processing capacity of 9.69 million metric tonnes every year. The MRPL is also visited by many tourists who are on a tourism in Mangalore in the recent times.

The Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited possesses a design that is quite versatile and flexible to various processes of API gravity and even possesses a very high standard of automation. The design capacity of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited has the capability to process 9.69 million tonnes per year and it serves to the only refinery throughout India to possess a couple of hydrocrackers that have the ability to produce premium diesel or high cetane. On 28th March, 2003, total shareholding of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited was taken over by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation making Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited a subsidiary of Oil and natural Gas Corporation. Environmental Care at the Refinery

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited is a refinery that has been found to be very well committed towards the protection of the environment in every field of refining. The design stage of the refinery has been developed in such a way that it works well towards safeguarding the environment in a big way. The Units within the refinery that are meant for the purpose of processing are found to be heat integrated so that the thermal efficiency of the refinery is good and at the same time it also brings about a reduction in the consumption of fuel gas or fuel oil and other emissions.

The NOx, CO and SOx burners are continuously monitored and they have also been provided with heaters for the reduction of emissions. The monitoring stations found within the refinery possess air quality for the purpose of observing real time concentrations. Secondary seals are there for all the floating tanks within the refinery for the reduction of Fugitive emissions. The furnaces within the refinery make use of low sulphur oil and advanced technology is used for the treatment of waste water from the refinery.

Treatment of Waste Water

The treatment approach that has been taken for waste water in the refinery is very modern and advanced. Waste water from the refinery contains Phenol, Grease, Oil and Sulphide and therefore there is an advanced treatment technology used for waste water from the refinery. The treatment includes Biological and Chemical Treatment, Physical Separation and Final Filtration along with Polishing. The water that is treated is further discharged in to the sea by way of the APMC pond that is located at a distance of 650 M and its depth is 6.5 M.

There is an independent agency that has been developed for observing the quality of marine environment and treated waste water around the area close to the discharge point all throughout the year. More than 70% of the treated water is recycled and made suitable to be used back within the refinery for the purpose of cooling towers. The most modern technique that is used for the treatment of waste water at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited is the use of Hydrogen Peroxide that helps in bringing about a reduction in sludge formation. It is only because of this reason that Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited has been certified ISO 14001:2004 and it even possesses the excellence in the field of environmental performance.

Biogas Plant

The Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited has also set up an anaerobic biogas plant for the treatment of garbage like organic food of the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited and even the township. By the help of this plant, the entire waste product or organic food of the refinery and the township is bio-treated in a plant that is environment friendly and at the same time it also produces bio-gas that serves to be a wonderful organic compost for greenery and for plants.

The Gold Award for Environment Excellence in the year 2007 was also received by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited from the GreenTech Foundation.
